Terms of Service

Effective Date: September 30, 2026

I. Acceptance of Terms

By using Philo you agree to these Terms of Service and to all applicable laws. If you do not agree with them, please do not use the application.

II. Description of Service

Philo is a thinking journal that pairs your own writing with philosophical wisdom. It provides:

• Quotations chosen for what you wrote, with a short reflection on each

• Guided reflection with Philo: one question at a time, and a takeaway in your words

• A private journal, a library of saved quotes and takeaways, and a calendar of entries

• Topics that keep related reflections together, next steps with later check-ins, and principles

• A Quote of the Day, on iOS also as a home-screen widget

• A Weekly Review that reads your own writing from the week back to you, with every observation tied to what you wrote

• Optional Scholar membership with expanded features

III. User Accounts

You need an account to use Philo. You are responsible for keeping your credentials confidential and for everything done under your account.

You must provide accurate information when you register and let us know promptly of any unauthorized use of your account.

IV. Your Content

You keep all rights to what you create in Philo: contemplations, reflections, journal entries, photos, answers in guided exchanges, takeaways, topics, next steps, and principles. You grant us only the limited license needed to store, process, and show that content back to you, including sending the relevant text to the language-model providers named in the Privacy Policy so that Philo can respond.

You are responsible for your content and confirm that it does not break any law or infringe anyone else's rights.

V. Generated Content

Philo's explanations, questions, replies, takeaway suggestions, and check-in questions are produced by language models. They are offered to help you think, not as facts about you or as professional advice. Quotations are drawn from a curated bank whose attributions are checked before use, but wording and sources can still contain errors; please verify a quotation before relying on it elsewhere. Book links are provided for convenience only.

Philo is not a substitute for medical, psychological, legal, or financial advice, and it is not an emergency service. If you are in crisis, contact local emergency services or a crisis line.

VI. Free Use and Fair-Use Limits

Free includes one contemplation per day with three quotes, one guided exchange with Philo each calendar week, photos on five entries each calendar month, one introductory Weekly Review, and the journal. Guided exchange turns are subject to daily limits, higher for Scholar members. Existing writing, photos, and anything you have saved stay readable whatever your plan. We may adjust these limits as the service evolves.

VII. Scholar Membership

Scholar is an optional auto-renewing subscription, offered monthly or yearly, that unlocks more quotes per reflection, deeper analysis, unlimited guided reflection, quote refreshes, unlimited photos, a Weekly Review for every completed week, and other extended features. Prices are shown in the app before you subscribe, in your local currency, and are charged through the App Store or Google Play.

Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. You can manage or cancel your subscription in your App Store or Google Play account settings. Refunds are handled by the store under its policies and applicable law.

VIII. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

• Use the service for any unlawful purpose

• Attempt to gain unauthorized access to our systems or other accounts

• Interfere with, overload, or disrupt the service

• Share your account credentials or circumvent usage limits

• Scrape, data mine, or use automated systems to access the service

IX. Intellectual Property

The Philo application, including its design, code, features, and curated content (other than your own content), belongs to us and is protected by intellectual property laws.

Quotations are taken from published works, most of them in the public domain, and are attributed to their authors and sources.

X. Disclaimer of Warranties

Philo is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We do not guarantee that the service will be uninterrupted, secure, or free of errors, or that generated content will be accurate or suitable for any particular purpose.

XI. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of Philo.

XII. Termination

We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms. You can delete your account at any time from Settings, which permanently removes your data as described in the Privacy Policy.

On termination your right to use the service ends. We may keep limited records where the law requires it.

XIII. Changes to Terms

We may change these Terms as Philo develops. Material changes will be communicated in the app or by email, and continued use after a change means you accept the new Terms.

XIV. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by applicable law, and any dispute will be resolved in the courts with proper jurisdiction.
